What was the best Beatles cover?

Postby PaleoLiberal » Tue Dec 20, 2016 10:51 am

A music writer, and big Stevie Wonder fan, at Slate is claiming that Wonder's 1970 cover of
"We Can Work it Out" is the best Beatles cover ever.

http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/wond ... cover.html

I'm not so sure about it. There were some other great Beatles covers.

For example--

Joe Cocker "I Get By with a Little Help from My Friends"
One of the best known and most highly regarded Beatles covers ever. When Joe Cocker died, Paul issued a statement about what a great cover this was.

Elton John "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"
The only Beatles cover to hit #1. John Lennon collaborated, and sang backup vocals. This was the second to the last song Lennon ever sang live, in a duet with Elton John.

Frank Sinatra "Something"
Not my favorite Beatles cover, but its showed the way the Beatles could write music in many genres, appealing to different people. (My grandmother loved "When I'm 64", for example).

Elvis also covered "Something", but this is less well known.

A bunch of guys at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Incredible guitar solo by Prince. Did that guitar ever come down?

And I had to leave out the 64 million covers of Yesterday.
Not to mention some of the great covers of post-Beatles work, such as Billy Preston's "My Sweet Lord" or several outstanding covers of "Working Class Hero"

Wisconsin's own Underground Sunshine covering "Birthday" on Dick Clark's American Bandstand.

I would definitely put Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of 'Dear Prudence' on the short list.

Also, Matthew Sweet did a pretty gear version of 'She Said She Said.'

But it's really hard to argue with Stevie's "We Can Work it Out." That whole first side of Signed, Sealed, Delivered is frickin' awesome.

I'm partial to Peter Seller's She loves you.

(Or maybe, She luffs you.)

Big fan here of Al Green's "I Want to Hold Your Hand." I love it so much.

fennel -- thanks for that one. I loved Peter Sellers.

Kenneth Burns -- Wow!
I think it meets my personal criteria for a great cover:

1. The original song was great.
2. The artist did something great to make the song his/her/their own
3. The end result was fantastic.

Those same criteria were why I like the Joe Cocker and Prince performances, not to mention the Stevie Wonder cover.

Not really a fair entry, but there is/was a prog rock supergroup of sorts that gets together on occasion to do entire nights of Beatles tunes.
