Maybe she means Neil Young. That would cover the "Neil" part, the "Canadian" part and be a bit more "hard rockin'" than Neil Diamond.

I'm not sure about the "hard rockin" part but yes definitely on the others.

Swimmie, can you remember any of the songs from that concert you loved so much? Did the words "holly holy" come up? Did he say anything about lying in a burned out basement?

Which raises the intevitable question - what does an Amish swimsuit look like?

Hey, in theory it's possible -- but just barely. Maybe swimmingupstream was born in 1956 [so not alive in 1955], and either started kindergarten early or skipped a grade, so as to begin ninth grade at age 13 in the fall of 1969 [so in high school in the "late 1960s"].

I was fudging a little there. Can't a lady fib about her age on the internet! LOL!

I was born in August, 1952. I have no real memories of 1955. So, in that way I was not really alive...

Okay. So, back to that "Neil" concert. Did he sing Song Sung Blue or Helpless?

Thanks Westsidegal, but I am sure everyone else is now sick of my trip down memory lane. So, it is probably best that I don't bore the rest of you.

It was definitely Neil Diamond. I must admit that I much more prefer his ballads over his hard rock numbers. My favorite is "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," but I don't remember if he sung it that night...

Neil Diamond was a fish-out-water at "The Last Waltz." It turns out that Robbie Robertson produced Neil Diamond's current record at the time, and he co-wrote the song he sang, "Dry Your Eyes."
Somebody in comments claimed that Neil Diamond was more popular than any of the acts on the stage of the "Last Waltz", and he still sells more albums than any of them. Not sure if that is true.

I'll only add a little to the mix; I went to a different Dead concert during the same tour as your concert and liked the show. It was at the university field house in DeKalb IL. It wasn't the best Dead show I'd ever been to but it was fun.

I never took a girlfriend to a dead show unless she knew the band and wanted to go. No one has ever asked (or ordered) me to bring them home before a concert was over but if they had I'd have laughed.

I've taken a couple people to the emergency room but not home.

He has no "hard rock" numbers. It's Neil fucking Diamond.
