Acclaimed Artist that you just can't get

Postby Huckleby » Mon Sep 26, 2011 8:16 pm

John Hiatt. I should like him, I like the style, but it sounds to me that he can't sing very well. As a Grateful Dead fan, that ought to be no barrier to my appreciating the music, but I just am not inspired. I think his bands are musically excellent, but I just don't get the emotion behind the songs.

My exposure to him is a half dozen times I've seen him on TV.

Steely Dan from my formative years. Probably Kings of Leon now.

Bob Dylan
Patti Smith
Nirvana
The Smiths (and by extension, Morrissey)
The Kinks
Beastie Boys (except The In Sound from Way Out!--awesome)
The Ramones
Lady Gaga
Madonna
The White Stripes
Eminem
Public Enemy

... and many more that no one cares to hear about.

Although I like the Kinks a lot, the albums that I like (Lola vs. Powerman..., Misfits, the 80's albums) are probably the *wrong* ones to like. So maybe that is a partial vote somehow.

wow. you are one cantankerous guy. I can see all of these choices, however, even though I like many of them. Except Madonna, she's not qualified as "acclaimed" musically, she just liked to mess with people and make dee money.

Perhaps, but my "like" list is much longer.

There's your problem, right there. Go down to the library and pick up some of his disks. Alive at Budokan is a great collection. Walk On may be his best work (and a Rolling Stone record of the year, I think) but his work has been spotty over the years as is anyone's. I had to listen to Master of Disaster a half dozen times before I decided I liked it but took to The Open Road immediately

I actually like much of what John Hiatt does; however, Rolling Stone liking it does give me pause.

Y'know, I could probably make a really long list, but I figure personal taste is personal taste, and as chainsawcurtis says, everyone's recorded output is spotty, so I feel bad singling out anybody in particular because I could have simply been exposed to the wrong stuff or heck, maybe I was just in a bad mood the day I heard them or whatever, so I'll just say The Beach Boys and be done with it.

John Hiatt is one of my favorite artists, but I see how others might not like him much. "Walk On" and "Crossing Muddy Waters" are two of my favorite albums of any artist.

One I just don't get--Red Hot Chili Peppers. Every song they do sounds the same, and I can't stand the lead singer's whiny voice. When their songs come on the radio, I find something else to listen to.

See now, you were pretending to be a real nice guy, then you slip the knife in.

I feel your ear pain, I used to dislike the BBs, but then I started listening to "Pet Sounds" because everybody said it was so great, and then I figured out it really is pretty great. I checked out their old stuff. You have to be in the mood. Maybe you have to be older than 50.

OK, I'll list another one because I am truly baffled by all the praise heaped on him: Leonard Cohen.

He's always seemed to me like the least interesting guy at a really bleak open mic party for horrible poets.

I'm going to be chuckling about that line all day.
