Road Trip Tunes

Postby swoon_queen » Wed Feb 10, 2010 4:25 pm

It was great to hear everyone's suggestions for places to stop along the way to NOLA and what to do once I get there. I thought it might be fun to hear tips on good driving music for my carefully crafted road trip mix!

What songs do you like to crank up loudly in the car and/or sing along to down the open road? any ideas welcome.

"Goin' Up the Country," Canned Heat. Especially on shitty, bumpy backroads.
"Jesus Built My Hot-Rod," Ministry. Only for interstate straightaways. Watch your speed.

In my opinion, AC-DC's "It's a long way to the top" can't be topped.

I have to agree "Jesus Built my Hot Rod" is one of the best driving songs ever!
Several years a friend and I took a road trip to an Aveda spa. After 3 days of being massaged, perfumed, lulled with harp music and no spoken word above a whisper, we jumped into the Vette, dropped the top, cranked up Ministry and peeled out of their scented parking lot in a cloud of dust and exhaust. But do watch your speed, I have caught myself doing about 95 on the beltline when that one is on!

I also second Roadrunner.

Other faves:
You Can't Catch Me ~Rolling Stones
Start Me Up " "
Built for Speed or anything by the Stray Cats
Girl Can't Help It ~Little Richard
Little Red Corvette (natch) ~Prince
Peter Gunn Theme ~Art of Noise
Key to your Ferrari ~Thomas Dolby
Girls just want to have Fun ~Cyndi Lauper
Freeway of Love ~Aretha Franklin
Miami Vice Theme, extended remix ~Jann Hammer
Wild Wild Life Talking Heads
There's a Barbarian in the back of my Car ~Voice of the Beehive
Blitzkrieg Bop ~The Ramones
Route 66 ~Brian Setzer Orchestra
King of the Road ~Roger Miller
I Want Candy ~Bow Wow Wow

And of course, with your destination in mind:
City of New Orleans Arlo Guthrie

I have about 3 hundred more.......

this is great!

Last year, a group of friends took a girls' weekend and went down to Chicago. The resulting mix, which I dubbed Chicago-a-go-go, was such a hit that I've already put it in the car for this trip. We'll see how my male companion reacts. I think it includes a bit of Beyonce, Ani Difranco, "Parentheses" by the Blow, and my go-to driving song, "Keep the Car Running" by Arcade Fire, along with 10 or so other songs.
