Now that others have posted some non-romantic summer songs, I am free to mention that XTC's Skylarking is my ultimate summer album, and the opening combo of "Summer's Cauldron" (with the crickets chirping) straight into "Grass" instantly makes me visualize my hometown's city park, and throwing the frisbee in the hazy, 90% humid afternoon sun, watching the frisbee hang in the air forever, cuz the air was so thick.
Things we did on grass.
evokes for me the summer of 1987, my favorite summer from my youth. "Summer's Cauldron" -> "Grass" is a gorgeous pastoral, and very romantic ("Over and over we flatten the clover").
That said, my teen romance was largely of the yearning sort, with occasional forays into awkward fumbling. Though it's true that in the summer of 1987 I dated a girl I met playing Galaga. We were both very good at Galaga. A few weeks later we got close watching Oliver North's testimony. By fall it was over. I started eleventh grade.
