Summer romance songs

Postby Kenneth Burns » Wed Jul 08, 2009 3:38 pm

It's July, and my thoughts turn to teenage memories of hot nights and love in the air. That means it's time for a list of summer romance songs. I give you:

The Rolling Stones, "Summer Romance"
The Beach Boys, "Girl Don't Tell Me"
LFO, "Summer Girls"
The Go-Go's, "Vacation"
Toby Keith, "Who's Your Daddy"

Etc.

"Summer Girls" is the one I can't stop listening to these days. I loved it in July 1999, and I love it in July 2009. I'm developing an exegesis of it that relates to Maurice Blanchot's The Writing of the Disaster, but I'll save that for another time.

This one, right here.

Kind of a summer romance gone bad song. Somewhat similar is one of my faves, Brian Hyland's "Sealed With A Kiss".

"Girl Don't Tell Me" makes me cry. There's mondo teen angst, and wonderful Carl Wilson's singing is urgent and sad. The folky arrangement and the absence of Beach Boy harmonies make it a very distinctive pre-Brian-Wilson-meltdown track.

Sorry, can’t help myself: Regardless of how you feel about LFO or Howard Stern, here is an extremely amusing interview Stern did with Rich Cronin of LFO earlier this year.

You’re going to have to trust me on this one—give it a few minutes.

Based on my summer teen years experiences, I'm throwing this one in the ring:

What Do I Get? by the Buzzcocks.

Catchy. Poppy. Direct. Sing-a-long factor high. Painfully accurate.

As I think about it, there's no reference to summer in "Vacation." I just assumed it was summer vacation, thanks in part to the summery video. But it could be winter vacation, or Maycation.

Love and Happiness, by Al Green. I'm not sure the lyrics make much sense, but who listens to lyrics?

Granted, it's dated, but my late teenage summer romances were invariably soundtracked by It's a Beautiful Day's "Hot Summer Day"- even when they weren't "flowing like a river."

Oh man, I'm slipping. I forgot one of the greatest songs ever. I love that tune.

"Summer In The City" by Lovin' Spoonful
"Summer Sand" by Tony Orlando and Dawn
"Indian Lake" by The Cowsills
"You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)" by Meat Loaf
"Gonna Hustle You" by The Legendary Masked Surfers
"Here Comes The Summer" by The Undertones

"Summer Song" by Chad & Jeremy is another nice sad one, as well as "Sunny Afternoon" by The Kinks.

Yup. I looooove summer music.

There's also "Summer Nights" from Grease and the Beach Boys' "Summer Means New Love," which is an instrumental, but oh well.

Oh yeah, that's a good one.

Also, "Jen Doesn't Like Me Anymore" by Less Than Jake, basically the anthem of my last years of high school.
