Yes, of couse, and that makes sense. And there are regulations in the license you need to bartend that already cover this.

Precisely. Definitely sucks for local bands, especially if free beer's part of their compensation. And beyond that-- can't imagine telling a touring band (or promoter, for that matter; seems both might fall into this broad category) that they can't have a drink or three while their show is happening. I feel for the bartender who has to potentially enforce this ridiculousness.

If inhibiting the 'drinking culture' is the focus here, ramp up the frat busts and fake ID sting ops.

Hey musicians, I encourage you to drink that 6 pack of Mountain Creek you bought before/during your performance, then throw the clean plastic bag you carried it in with into the trash.

So, basically, it would be illegal to develop a new cocktail at a bar since it would be illegal to actually sample it?

Who besides Schumacher is actually in favor of this un-American proposal? Can anyone give me an example of another city that has such an ordinance in place? Somewhere in Kansas maybe?

Big Shoe must've damn well known his short-sighted proposal is a sure bust. I mean, what possible percentage of the population would support such idiocy? Prohibition failed and will fail again.

Here are all the members of the ALRC. All should be contacted.

Surprise! I spoke with Ald. Schumacher a few minutes ago. He called in response to my email in opposition to preventing musicians from drinking alcohol while performing. I explained to him the concept of contract riders expressly naming beer/alcohol and wine brands commonly in place between management and promoters.

He clearly communicated to me that he will be offering a substitute on Wednesday excluding performing musicians, etc, from the legislation. He said that it was never his intention to prevent musicians from drinking alcohol and it was an oversight. Further, he said it was our emails that brought it to his attention and caused him to offer the substitution.

Nice work, folks!

Hey, there's even a vacancy on the committee?! I wonder how many hoops are involved with that appointment.

Good news everyone! I emailed Michael, and here's what he said....

Hi Brett, I will be introducing a substitute to clarify this issue and exempt personnel/contractors such as musicians and artists. We never intended to include performers but the current language is confusing. The new version will focus on personnel that is responsible for dispensing alcohol, operations, and security. We are also providing a provision for employees to perform sample tastings as part of their job.

I trust this will ease your concerns. Please let me know, Michael

I'm with Verveer. The ordinance seems unnecessary.

From the Isthmus article:
Ald. Mike Verveer, a member of the ALRC, doesn't support the ordinance, which is similar to a proposal introduced at the state level that has drawn similar flak.

"I believe it's a solution in search of a problem," says Verveer, noting that there's already a city ordinance against bartenders being drunk while on duty. "I don't see a crying need for this."

It's a time-honored tradition to do a shot with your favorite bartender from time to time. Particularly if she's hot and you're trying to get her pliant.
