Cafe Zoma Benefit - 1/28 - Call for Performers!

Postby keelio » Mon Jan 05, 2009 10:36 am

Cafe Zoma has closed, but there is hope in the Schenk-Atwood area that a neighborhood coffeehouse/cafe, gathering space, gallery, and performance venue will rise once again to fill the void between Absolutely Art and Revolution Cycles. To that end a group of Cafe Zoma friends are organizing a fundraiser to offset expenses for the space (rent, utilities, insurance) while searching for new ownership. The event planners also hope to provide some assistance to recently laid-off staff.

As an area musician who has played with a number of singer/songwriters and bands through the years, I have a vested interest in preserving the performance space and enhancing opportunities in the future. I've had the pleasure of playing there - both indoors and outdoors (on the patio) - under the original ownership and the current. It's a venue that's been underutilized, and will hopefully become a vibrant performance space to complement the neighborhood and Madison music scene.

The benefit will be at the Goodman Center on Wednesday, January 28, tentatively from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, possibly 10:00 pm. The fundraiser will include music performance, ‘Taste of the East Side’, Silent Auction (performers are invited to donate CDs for the silent auction), and other activities. Performers will provide short sets - probably up to 5 songs (15-20 minutes max), though this may vary depending on the number of interested performers. Format will be 'unplugged', though a small PA will be provided. Bands/groups are welcome and encouraged to participate, though understanding the need for quick setup and transitions – i.e. hand drums/percussion vs. trap kit, etc. – what you would anticipate in a coffeehouse setting.
