Where should I send those pesky press releases?

Who's making noise in and around Madison? What's new in the business of making music around town? Review shows and CDs here. Please keep all hype in Hype Exchange.

Press releases - is it worth it?

Yes, my cat made a cool noise coughing up a guitar pick, I wrote a press release, and it got picked up by Parade magazine.

No, press releases are diametrically opposed to our bands vision of the indie roots culture paradigm, according to our bass player

Where should I send those pesky press releases?

Postby Scott » Wed Feb 07, 2007 3:28 pm

Hey fellow forum-types -

I keep hearing that I need to send out press releases if I ever want press for my band. Since I am probably the worst "band manager" (cough cough) in town, I never did jump on that particular propeganda dissemination wagon. But now I'm thinking maybe I should.

So- does anyone know of a website or listing of all the different local fax numbers and email addresses I could send these press releases to? I'm lazy.

Anyone have any press release horror stories or fun anecdotes?

Is it actually worth it to send out press releases?

yes. it's worth it. and it's important.

the big ones are the onion and the isthmus. pick one of each up and find the appropriate email addresses inside, usually for some calendar editor or events editor or something.

i contact the other papers too when something really big happens (like a release party) but i think onion and isthmus are all you really need to do for regular shows.

then there's online stuff like dane101.com, this site's hype exchange and other places too.

You're on, depinmad!

I challenge you to a duel of promo kits at dawn!

Wait a sec... my press kit is our myspace page... guess it doesn't have to wait until dawn.

I'd put in a link to our myspace page, but don't want to anger the hype exchange gods.

feh.

you win.

I hate to disappoint you guys but I am by far the most inept and incompetent business man when it comes to the music biz.

ok tough guys.
what's the most you've ever personally spent on recording an album that will never see the light of day, for no other reason than you can't be bothered to get it into anyone's hands?
i'm up to 1200 bucks and counting.

It's better to be incompetent than incontinent. Not that there's anything wrong with the continent you're in. hee hee.

Anyhow... I bought stuff from your shop, back in the day. And I seem to remember you have an active tax ID number at Vinnie's, as well. So you must be somewhat "ept".

EDITED and for fun...
http://blogs.chicagoreader.com/crickets/2007/02/02/uninviting-invitation/
not on Cathy's list:
Emmie Magazine
Memorial Union
Wisconsin Union Directorate â?? Publications Committee
800 Langdon St.
Madison, WI 53706
emmieeditorATTHINGgmailDOTcom

since i'm extremely biased towards all permutations of webby stuff...

also try
Dane 101
email: infoATTHINGdane101
or jesseDOTrussellATHINGgmailDOTTTTTTcom

Contessa Says [contessasays.com]
contessasaysATTHINGgmailDOTcom

for anything hip-hop-ish, mention the show to
erikaATTHINGbestdesignereverDOTcom to get it up on madisonhiphop.com

Muzzle of Bees [muzzleofbees.com]
RSM
250 Junction Rd #19
Madison, WI 53717
uwmryan at yahoo dot com

Cathy's list is pretty comprehensive, but some of the info is dated, like the Onion's, for instance. The local AV Club editor's mailbox is here (not sure if I've got the title right, but the address below is accurate) :
Scott Gordon
Editor, Onion AV Club: Madison
1360 Regent Street #173
Madison, WI 53715

my box is in that same UPS store
Hastings Cameron
madison.com/post
1360 Regent St. #211
Madison, WI 53715
[hastingsDOTcameronATTHINGgmailDOTcom or post_music@madison.com yes, i'm nominally writing about hip-hop, but if you pass along info/music, i'll make sure it gets into eager hands/keyboards...]

Maximum Ink also has an address setup for press releases now:
publicity@maximumink.com

[quote="depinmad"]ok tough guys.

Actually, two of us are former "Tough Guys", as in Phil Gnarly and the...

You got me on the $1200 album thing, although I've probably spent more when you look at it as an over-the-years type of thing. Much as I would love to have a record label budget, I don't. I've found that I can spend much less, and actually have more fun, if I do it myself with an old 4 track. Lately I've hooked the 4 track up to an ancient windows 98 computer running Cakewalk and an M-audio Delta 44, been getting some pretty good results.... posted soon to the myspace page.

hasting's link to the Chicago Reader makes me wonder if my band is the Madison equivalent of Marrilion. God, I hope not. Sigh. Good information there, though.

The press releases have been sent out- now let's see if this thing actually works!

Thanks, everyone!

i don't believe we've met, but are you really a "hardcore band of angry 19-year-olds who just discovered tempo changes?"

regardless, best of luck with the mail-bombing

I'm not sure you should send every press release out to everyone.

You could wear out your welcome.

As with relatives only use their help when you really need it so only bother the press when it's really going to pay off.

& sometimes concentrate on certain avenues and other avenues at other times.

Maybe a myspace is a good idea ?

Hey Scott! I remember you. How are ya doing? Well, I can chew gum and write a check at the same time. That's about it.
