Springsteen or Rollins?

Postby Stu Levitan » Tue Oct 11, 2005 1:27 am

Solo acoustic Bruce Springsteen at the Coliseum or Sonny Rollins at the Overture. Same date, same time. Which to attend?

Um, did The Boss ever put out an album entitled Saxophone Colossus? I think not. Sir Rollins wins this round.

Damn straight.

What day is this show? If it were guaranteed that I'd hear "You Don't Know What Love Is", I'd go see Sonny Rollins.

This Saturday (15th). I have a conflict or I'd probably plunk down the dough.

FROM THE DESK OF RRNT

What an excellent question!

Sonny is clearly the better choice because...

1) He doesn't tour nearly as much as the Boss.
2) He doesn't need a "big man" to prop him up.
3) St. Thomas trumps Thunder Road hands down.

I believe I've made my case.

Well shit. Then the question should be Rollins at Overture or Motorz at Klinic (shameless plug).

Don't answer that.

well i bought my bruce tickets day of sale, got cheap seats cause they'll be just as good as any others (he's got tv screens and shit, and i had cheap seats for milwaukee in august and the sound was perfect upstairs)
but i checked back a week later and you could get eight tickets together on the floor, about a third of the way back!

so yeah, i think there'll be a lot of empties, maybe too many for there to even be scalpers. when the stones played camp randall, i walked down hoping to get a cheap seat, cause i knew they'd only half sold the place but there wasn't a ticket to be had except at the box office :(

So let me get the options straight: World-class, brilliant, top-caliber, one-of-the-greats sax god vs. competent-but-overhyped, low-brow, pseudo-poet, undeniably bland pop dude (don't get me wrong...seems like a nice guy whose heart's in the right place). Hmmmm. It's a toss-up. Think I'll go with Greg Brown. My old rock outfit of yore used to do a mean cover of "Downtown."
