Best soup and salad in Madison

Postby Shorty » Fri Apr 29, 2011 10:25 am

The lengthy Best burger thread shows there is no shortage of burgers here. For those of us looking for lighter, healthier food, what are the Best soup and salad places in Madison?

I really like Madison Sourdough for soups, salads, and sandwiches. True Food has good salads, too.

NOT Panera. I can't believe that place stays in business.

I like Panera's soup but their salad is weak. Is Madison Sourdough a cafe on Willy St? Sounds good but not a good location for me on the West side.

Is True Food the La Brioche restaurant? I will have to try that.

I have always liked the soups at Monty's Blue Plate, I don't recall eating a salad there for quite awhile, but they always look okay. I also enjoy the sandwiches and salads at Manna Cafe as well as Cool Beans coffee shop (near East Towne Mall). Both of these places usually have quality, fresh ingredients.

My favorite Madison soup is Himal Chuli's dal. I also like the soups at the Good Food cart: https://twitter.com/thegoodfoodcart. I am not much of a salad person so I can't speak to the quality of their salads.

Cosi is becoming my casual go-to for soup and salad light meals. However, you need to be careful- many of their soups are really not "light" at all- I think their tomato basil/whatever is among the worst- full of creamy, fatty goodness. yummmmmm..

Sunprint - in the glass bank downtown - has wonderful soups and salads.

My vote would be the Marigold Kitchen. (Vegetarian, so take that with a grain of salt.) They make the best tomato soup I've had anywhere and their sandwiches are consistently wonderful.

Lots of other good options here too. Himal Chili also has an awesome "Goat Herder's Soup" which is my preferred hangover meal.

Cranberry Creek (formerly Kitchen Hearth) has a very decent carryout soup selection on the square. Typically 5 different soups daily - I've had some exceptional ones (e.g.: red pepper shrimp bisque), and others that were delicious if not transcendent.

The Himal dal + their chile chicken salad (if they actually have it on hand) is an amazing meal.

Don't sniff at the soup and salad at Old Country Buffet. The salad bar has great variety (several kinds of greens, including fresh spinach). And their soup is better than expected from such a high volume joint. They have three kinds of soup every day. The clam chowder on fridays brings on the clams. Soup & salad for weekday lunch is just $5.
