Re: Microwave popcorn harmful

So what I'm getting from all this is that I shouldn't have microwave popcorn injected into me.

The near-forced-labor adds that extra something to the meal.

Re: VIP Asian

Sichuan Eggplant: good, and thankfully not overcooked into mush, as so often happens with eggplant dishes I expect it does happen often, but have you ever had undercooked eggplant? It's a well known transmission vector for despair. I have made undercooked eggplant. It is...unpleasant. On the flipsi...

Re: Penzeys

I still shop there for most things, I just order my pimenton from The Spice House.

I use their smoked paprika mostly to build BBQ rubs, becasue it's cheaper than the real stuff.

VIP Asian

Okay, the place looks like a strip club from the early 90's. Or possibly a backup set from "Cocktail." I went with a few friends last week. We ordered off the chinese menu. And it was totally worth it. Appetizers: "green bean curd with sichuan sauce." I'm not sure if green bean c...

Re: Helping your kids stick with music lessons

It's a tricky line. I taught violin for a few years, mostly wee kids, and it was pretty obvious which kids were going to stick with it and which weren't. If their parents were sitting in the lessons with them and giving running commentary the whole time, there was generally a feeling that they'd dro...

Re: Duck Legs for Confit

When you say "sourced locally" do you mean "come from local farms" or "purchasable at local stores?" Because UW Provision usually has duck parts for a reasonable cost. As do a few of the asian markets around town (although that's often wings, which aren't useful for con...

Re: China Buffet moves to former Pedro's

It appears to be the same one as at Southtown, the "World Buffet."

At least they have a noodle soup bar. I'll give 'em that.

Re: BBQ

To follow up from above, I cut my tomatoes and eggplant in half before smoking them. I'm not sure if it's necessary, but it kept them from rolling away.

I did the sweet potatoes whole. Perhaps that was my problem.

Re: BBQ

Smoked eggplant is amazing. Smoked tomatoes make a really good soup. Smoked sweet potatoes didn't work as well as I'd hoped. They were okay, but they didn't work nearly as well as the whole shoved-in-the-embers thing. I fully intend to try smoking some wild rice and see how that cooks up. I have a v...

Re: Pono Music

And technically your mastering engineer is supposed to be testing for translatability as well. Mixing at 96khz I get, kinda. I've done it, there's...some benefit to it (although not bloody much IMHO, especially if you've got good oversampling. I did some blind A/B/C testing of different sample rates...

Blowin Smoke

A week ago I grabbed dinner at Blowin Smoke on HWY113. Gotta say, pretty solid. A few misses, but some great hits. The menu is vast; probably a bit too vast. I can see a lot of the non-specialties falling by the wayside. Both my wife and I had the same thing, the "Chief." It was basically ...

Re: Pono Music

While I applaud the idea of lossless compression in a portable music player (hey, we're finally at the point where we have cheap storage for it all), as far as the superhigh bit rates/sampling rates are concerned, Neil's off his gourd. He doesn't understand Nyquist-Shannon theory, and at his age (an...
