Re: JB's Eat-A-Bite BBQ

Just don't get the brisket - I don't know if they were having an off-day, but I've had beef jerky that was easier to chew. Everything else has been tasty, but the brisket was a total let-down.

Re: Could you afford a new car?

I work downtown and he drives me there and picks me up, so if a job comes around where we can't coordinate our schedules, we'll have a car payment AND a monthly parking bill. The bus? You may not be on a good bus line, but a friend of mine recently started driving to a place where she could catch t...

Re: Could you afford a new car?

Re: Mini Cooper - just don't get theturbo. A very good friend bought one brand-new, an the thing has been an absolute money pit. She's been advised that she's not alone. No, we cannot afford a car right now, which is why we're currently a one-car household. It's okay for now, but we may have an issu...

Re: Brushes With Greatness

I went to high school with Imani Coppola, and undergrad with Christian Van Horn (though I'm not sure if anyone knows who either of them are).

Oh thank heaven...

I have no idea how I missed it when it was announced in June, but 7-Eleven signed a deal to take over a slew of Open Pantry locations - I only just found out a few days ago, when I had to do a double-take while driving down Regent. Most satisfying Slurpee in years. :D Yes, I'm one of those annoying ...

Re: Shish Cafe?

I saw a listing on Craigslist, advertising that the space was available for rent. Sad, I'd always wanted to go, but never made it there.

Re: Sardine?

I haven't been there in ages, but I'll throw in another vote for the charcuterie plate - it's worth it for the duck liver mousse alone.

Re: Grocery Shopping on the cheap...it sucks. (long post)

Late coming to this, but I can't tell you how close your list has been to ours in the past, and I LOVE Aldi. I'm guessing the light sour cream and ranch dip packet are for dip? If you don't mind swapping little extra fat for the gas you'd use to get to Copps, Aldi's dips are good, and IIRC, they're ...

Re: Income tax time

If you (the OP) had not paid that extra in, would you have saved it, or would it just be gone? If you saved it incrementally throughout the year in a traditional savings account you would be missing out on less than the cost of a good tap beer. Treat it as a savings account. Stick your refund in an...

Re: Your foron name

It was one of my late Grandmother's nicknames for me, given shortly after I was born. If it's taken somewhere I want/need to have a username, I'll usually attach my first name to it.

Cleaning service recommendations?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a household cleaning service? I'd rather use someone local, but willing to use a chain if they're good. It would likely be a one-time thing, but by no means light work (long story).

Thanks!

Re: Moving Companies

Another vote for Two Men and a Truck. We used them when we moved here from Fond du Lac in 2007. Fast, friendly, professional, and only a couple hundred more than we would have spent on a U-Haul truck/gas/pizza and beer for friends. Well worth it, if you can swing it. Plus, we moved early-mid April, ...

Re: Soup recipes

Here are a couple that have been popular around Chez Beenie of late: Sausage and Spinach soup (customizable): 1lb mild Italian sausage (I'm a wuss, use hot if you want it) 4c chicken stock (whatever you have on hand - sometimes I use Better than Bouillon, must mostly homemade) 3 15oz cans butterbean...
