Re: Sweet Ugliness

This is related only tangentially, I suppose, but would it be beyond the bounds of decorum to list favorite most-ugly residences that we have encountered in our local walkabouts? (In a new thread, I mean.) There are several in my neighborhood — some so ugly that I have to ask, "How did this com...

jman111 wrote:So...heated ceilings. Really a thing?
I lived in a barn in VT that was converted into a music studio/living space in the early 70s. Radiant electric heat in the ceiling. Completely unusable once electric rates went above, essentially, zero in the late 70s.

Re: House hunting

A galley kitchen is convenient if only one person is cooking at a time -- everything's pretty much within reach if you just turn around. Yes, like a bivouacking tent... But for a galley kitchen, it's pretty nice. Nice aesthetically, and there are also two entry points (I think), so that should aid ...

There's been some recent success with sterilization, but I expect it's none to cheap to implement.

I bet it would be a minimum of 35K to refinish the interior wood in that place. But pretty, yes.

Re: House hunting

Whatever caused the soot is long gone. Yes, along with the charm of a real fireplace. I lived nearly a decade with only wood heat. It was work, it was inconvenient, etc. But it was also lovely. It's not for everybody, but there really is no substitute. We have a problematic fireplace in our home. I...

Re: House hunting

And while I love the fireplace wall that extends outside the house, I have to wonder how they fixed it/can fix it so the wall junction with the stone doesn't leak air, water, and critters. Given the smoke stains, I also wonder how well the chimney draws. Now, if they had just cleaned up the soot (e...

Re: House hunting

Okay, I kinda love that house! I don't even mind the galley kitchen, that's what we have now. You just need to inve$t in a counter-depth fridge to so it doesn't stick out like that. Yes, it's actually blocking part of the doorway. That has to go. And maybe get rid of that strange mansard roof looki...
