Re: Duck boats

Weather and command/control issues aside, it seems like a key issue is that there were side windows on this thing, as well as the more typical roof. I have to think that there would have been dramatically fewer fatalities if the sides of the boat were open. Still rough water for non-swimmers, but at...

Re: Crossfit Games

To be honest, I don't find it interesting. This is coming from someone that enjoys watching almost any sort of racing - motor sports, horse racing, track and field, swimming, Tour de France, whatever. But never had any interest in this (or triathalon) Not throwing any shade at the talents of the par...

Re: The Immigration Debate

Where are the conservatives on this board? Why don't they weigh in as to whether or not they support Trump's policy of separating children from their parents? Only a moderate as compared to the US or the rest of Wisconsin, but I'm sure I am a John Bircher as compared to Madison. I would like curren...

Re: Sprecher's

That is good news - that Columbus bowling alley is a nice, new place. I think the owners maybe just overbuilt as compared to their cash reserves. I'm guessing Sprecher's has a better chance of making a go of it.

Re: Life after college in Madison

Memorial is a great high school. Memorial can be a good school. I think it is good for kids that are high-performing and motivated, or socially mature. I think they have a lot of help available for kids that struggle. But if your kids are kind of quiet and like to slip into the background, it is pr...

Re: Sonic Drive-in Closed?

I always meant to try out Sonic. When they first opened many folks told me it was good. These folks, by the way, were boomers. We went there - the ice cream treats and stuff were fine, but the food was just meh to me. When I grew up we had an A&W with car hops, as well as two locally owned plac...

Oh, well.

Yeah, he (and Trump) are obviously just as bad or worse.

Re: Roseanne

I don't know if that is totally true. It's totally true. (Just curious: in your calculus, is Samantha Bee higher on the power scale than Ivanka Fucking Trump?) You said that it is different because it came from a woman and not a man, not because of the relative position as compared to the target of...

Re: Roseanne

I've had this conversation with the mercifully absent bdog: it's different coming from a woman. I don't know if that is totally true. A woman with access to a major media outlet issuing a pre-written statement sits a bit higher up on the power scale than a woman or man in the middle of an impropmpt...

Re: Colin Kaepernick

I am trying to figure out if there is any difference between the treatment of Rosanne Barr and Colin Kaepernick. The situations are pretty different. Roseanne's problem is that someone dumb enough to think that stuff is probably also dumb enough to tweet about it. Kaepernick's only problem was that...

Re: Roseanne

So what's Olberman got to do with it? Do they hang out at the same cannabis bars? Beats me why anyone brought him up, but Charlie Steiner was quoted that while Olberman was possibly an intellectual genius, he was socially a special-needs student. Roseanne seems to fit that pattern, minus all the ge...

Re: Roseanne

Dang - she really kind of went off the rails there. Certainly there are some comedians that can get away with more than others during a routine. But this wasn't a routine, wasn't even a joke, and was sent via Twitter, the social media platform with the least chance for subtlety. (Not that she was no...

Re: Welcome Back, 'Murphy Brown': Just in Time to Take on 'Alternative Facts and Fake News'

About the same, except that Bergen is an actress, while Barr is a stand-up comic basically playing herself, or at least a modified version of her stand up "character". Roseanne certainly had a better supporting cast, and possibly better writing until the end. But I'm sure she was grating f...
