Re: More Campaign Finance "reform"

When I first heard the "reasonable person" language, first thought also was that it is too vague and needs to be tightened up. But then second thought was that maybe they were making it inflation-proof. There are ways to make it inflation proof without leaving it needlessly vague (Make th...

Re: More Campaign Finance "reform"

Missing the "h" in "http" for the first link Henry Require a judge to recuse if, within the last for years, a party in the case has contributed $1000 or more — directly or in independent expenditures. Goes way beyond the USSC ruling, where the the majority made it pretty clear it...

Got to hand it to ned, first he shows that it would be legal for the president to bar immigration, then makes it perfectly clear that it wouldn't do any good.

Re: iphone pocket dialing

I don't know about an app for android, but if you lock the screen it should prevent pocket dials (although I personally locked it to avoid excessive pictures of my pocket).

Re: "Hate Speech" vs. Freedom of Speech in Canada - a false dichotomy?

I think the internet is part of the problem. Impersonal communications with strangers are by their nature going to be less tactful than those with friends. I think that mostly means that with anonymity, they will likely be more honest of innermost feelings. Exactly. That's why people make death thr...

Re: Batman vs The Cops

Did Batman ever beat up an innocent person? Well in Batman #1 (1940) he killed a mentally ill patient who had been affected by some mad scientist's toxic serum (turning the patient into a killing machine). It be debatable except that Batman had just given himself the antidote to the serum so there ...

Re: Batman vs The Cops

But now I see you're saying this is the wrong superhero to use. My response is that none would be the right one. The first steps towards a sea change are always the wrong ones. Not sure I agree with those assessments. I can think of a few DC and several Marvel heroes that I think would be much bett...

Re: Batman vs The Cops

When cops start policing themselves, turning in and FIRING the ones who are giving them a bad name, I'll worry more about their well being. Seeing as it's a comic book story, even if I were worried about their well being, I wouldn't be worried about their well being. The notion that someone might b...

Re: Batman vs The Cops

The irony I was talking about wasn't in DC's response but in the fact that their response seems to not actually be condemning unnecessary violence as a response to criminal activities. The problem isn't unnecessary violence, the problem is police violence. Both are a problem in my mind but in terms...

Re: "Hate Speech" vs. Freedom of Speech in Canada - a false dichotomy?

In addition to what PJ said which is spot on, I think you also have to realize there's a difference between censorship and being told we don't allow that kind of language/behavior in here. The CBC being a public institution muddles that somewhat, but I don't think shutting down comment sections comp...

Re: Batman vs The Cops

I think you have a overly generous view of both Miller and DC comics. Quite possibly. But intentional or not, there's logic in the argument. I don't know. Batman is pretty much the poster child for brutally violent superheros. I don't see how he suddenly sees an issue with police brutality and deci...

Re: Batman vs The Cops

Batman is acting out against police brutality... Batman? As written by Frank Miller? The same guy who had Batman fight a street gang with a tank? Or hang a guy off the top of a skyscraper to question him? And being that it Batman, he's doing it by beating the hell out the bad cops... I think it's a ...
