Re: WI highways

The report finds that estimated costs for 19 major projects completed between 2006 and 2016 were $1.5 billion. That is $772 million more than initially projected." In ten years and 19 projects, we only spent 1.5 billion? And THAT was over budget? If I had to guess I would have said something l...

Re: Edgewater two years later

I question how many of you see the Edgewater in the course of a week, or a month, or even a season — because it's not particularly visible from anywhere but a few blocks of Wisconsin, the top of Langdon, and the lake. I do have a significant gripe with one aspect of the design: The obnoxiously larg...

Re: Edgewater two years later

For comparison, Hotel Red also gets good rankings from TripAdvisor, but I think local people pretty much eat and drink elsewhere in that part of town too. Maybe this is just how hotels are run. Actually, their restaurant is not bad. I little pricey, but that sort of goes with the territory. The foo...

Re: Edgewater two years later

I don't hate the design, but am still skeptical that the plaza that occupies the end of Wisconsin Ave - BTW, still a public right of way - will ever be truly public. It feels very private and uninviting. when I was there, a large tent blocked any view of the lake although there was no event. I ate a...

Re: Chicago scared us off

I used to live in Chicago -- in a neighborhood that I would not be able to afford now due to gentrification. But it was still perfectly safe as long as you didn't look like a complete fool late at night. (And FWIW, being young and stupid, and frequently drunk late at night, I did look like a complet...

Re: The Avenue to close - Food Fight are Liars

Sorry to hijack a smoking ban discussion with a post related to the original topic, but: anyone here been to the Avenue Club yet? Thanks you! I was going to type almost the same thing. I am genuinely interested to hear if the food and atmosphere (and no, I don't mean anything having to do with smok...

Re: Hilldale Mall

The owners of the mall are from Boston and own malls all the way up to the Canadian border in New England. I think they are aware of the pros and cons of outdoor vs indoor malls. As TBP mentioned, indoor shopping centers are a dead or dying breed. Somehow, the need to be outdoors doesn't stop people...

Re: Hopcat

Maybe someone with actual knowledge of Wisconsin sales tax law can confirm or refute this, but my understanding was that sales tax was not charged on alcohol sold in bars or restaurants. That's why so many supper clubs with handwritten tabs will total the booze up on the back, the food on the front,...

Re: obnoxious advertising

American Mattress (is that right?), which always seems to have a warehouse sale going on. They yell at you, repeat the phone number, and mispronounce "Stoughton Rd." I cannot reach for the remote fast enough. I would sleep on the floor before buying anything from those folks. Do TV station...

Re: eReader recommendation

I know you said you want to avoid big corporations, and therefore want to avoid Kindles, but the Paperwhite is really great. One thing I like is that it is NOT backlit, but is actually lit around the edge of the screen. What that means is that the light doesn't shine into your eyes, so it reduced ey...

Re: JDS subsidy-seeking Bob Dunn owes $312K in back taxes on Edgewater LLC

The tragedy to me is that Exact Sciences decided to get into bed with Dunn. I think the idea of Exact Sciences moving downtown is very good on many levels. It's the way things are going, with smart companies recognizing that the employees they want to hire want to live and work in a city, not a subu...

Re: Acess: City Hall -- Madison Transit & Parking

Not about transit, but about parking. Ask Gary Poulson about the Isthmus story this week: Does TPC really thinks it's a good idea to build 600+ parking spaces for a private company just so they can then not use the city-owned spaces? Should we be subsidizing the competition. so to speak? And on the ...

Re: Madison Metro needs a bigger garage?

If I am not mistaken, the Federal government requires that the buses it pays for be stored inside. In a city the size of Madison, you can't get operating funds for transit from the feds, but you can buy stuff -- like buses -- with federal money. Want more routes, or more frequent bus service? or big...

Why is Taylor Swift in the news every day?

OK, I admit that I don't really follow music, and I wouldn't be her target audience anyway. But my news feed - a general news RSS feed from various sources, not including any sources targeting celebrities, music, fashion, or entertainment - has got more Taylor Swift stories than anyone except Obama....

Re: Book of Mormon

Yeah. As I said, might as well make a weekend of it in Chicago. It's playing in a wonderful historic Loop theater Feb 24-May17.

With tickets $67-$107, it's not that much more than Overture. And I'll bet their website works.
