Re: Presidents Day*

Dear City2CountryGal: Maybe I came off too abruptly. You have a lot to say and many good points to make and dialog to initiate - which makes a great blog. You put goodness into the forum (soup, yes!) which is much needed now. I appreciate your starting topics like that. I do feel that some posts - n...

Re: Did you vote today?

#156 at Hawthorne at 6. The last Station of the Cross before one attained access to the actual voting booth for that brief moment of democratic process offered suckers (Tootsie Pops, actually) to voting citizens. It felt somehow symbolic.

Re: If you have to ask...

Morgan's sold me too big shoes, too small shoes to my brother, and ones that fell apart in a month to my son. I think their shoe fit experts just want to get rid of their inventory. What a pity. They used to be reputable.

Re: Detroit

I don't know that it's so unfair. I waited on him at Little Ceasar's, saw him around Jackson; he wrote a sports column for The Jackson Citizen Patriot and presided over Ducks Unlimited events. Jackson loves that meglomaniac, he chose the right small pond. Historically, Jackson aggressively pursued b...

Re: Detroit

Ah, Detroit. Oh, Michigan. Coming from a mid-sized town outside Detroit (not close enough to be a suburb, yet close enough that our economies were married), my first memory of Detroit is Dad taking us to a post-riot-1960s Tigers game, while slums still smoldered. It looked like Hell, to my parochial...

Re: Reco's for private dining room?

Maple Bluff Country Club has beautiful views, good food and great service, and you don't have to be a member to use their facility for "parties from 4 to 500" (they just can't advertise because they're a private club). I don't know about Nakoma or Blackhawk availability to non-members. Can...

Re: Spaghetti sauce

While I'm all off topic, Grandpa Giordano's widow, very elderly, suffered a heart attack at one of the extended family's frequent trattoria gatherings. Hauled away in an ambulance, she died en route to hospital. In her purse they found several canolli she'd pilferred from the restaurant, "for l...

Re: Spaghetti sauce

To take the bite out of tomato paste, my pal Giordano's grandpa sauteed it in olive oil over medium high heat until it turned from dark red to more orange. Lost its acidity and thickened the gravy without being cloying. He always added 1 tbls. sugar for pizza sauce. We tried it without sugar and it ...

Re: This Maniaci situation

Stu, It was over a month ago & I can't exactly recall what she said about the Landmarks Commission, sorry there. Inside wisecracks that made half the good neighbors there wince but was meant for the developer honorees in the front to have a laugh. Which they did. It was icky in its transparency....

Re: This Maniaci situation

She's a loose cannon. Saw her speak at the reception before the grand opening of the new Tenney Park Shelter (which replaced a timeless, architecturally significant structure and which will look awful in about 10 years), making jokes about the Landmark Commission and ingratiating herself to the good...

Re: So what are you reading?

At Half Price Books today I saw a CD by Union Cab drivers I should've got. Purchased The Devious Book for Cats by Fluffy & Bonkers. Currently reading 20 Letters to a Friend by Svetlana Alliluyeva, Stalin's daughter who recently died in Richland Center, of all places.
